AUSTRALIA’S ONLY BEACH POLO TOURNAMENT TO RETURN TO CABLE BEACH IN 2014

Marilynne Paspaley AM has announced Pinctada Cable Beach Polo will return to Broome in 2014 following the success of this year’s tournament, which concluded in spectacular style yesterday with a thrilling international clash between top Indian and Australian players.

During the weekend, Australia’s only beach polo tournament attracted visitors from around Australia and the world to the famous pearling town in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia and even a flash storm that drenched players in yesterday’s opening game couldn’t rain on Broome’s polo parade.

The Kimberley sun returned for the Paspaley International Beach Polo Match, which went to the wire with Matt Welsh, captain of the Pinctada Cable Beach Australia team, clinching a 4-3 victory for the home side in the dying seconds of the final chukka.

“India beat us in the last two encounters on their home turf so it was great to get the win on the sand before our home crowd,” Matt said.  “It was a hard and fierce clash, the Indians were very strong and anyone who thinks beach polo is a novelty sport just needed to see the vigor and aggression on Cable Beach this weekend.  Beach polo is a serious sporting contest and while there are only eight countries in the world that host the sport, it is growing in stature and gaining interest among the world’s best players.”

With social media networks taking the action and excitement of Pinctada Cable Beach polo to the world this weekend, Marilynne Paspaley said there is already interest from international teams for next year’s event.

“This weekend was the realisation of a vision my team, the Broome community and a handful of committed polo patrons and players have been working towards for the past two years,” Marilynne said. “I couldn’t be more delighted with the spectacle we experienced on Cable Beach this weekend - we saw fine equine athletes in action on the sand, we saw the marvelous skills of the Indian and Australian players who competed in four matches over the weekend and we saw young Indigenous stockmen play their first game of polo in the inaugural Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge after training on their stock horses in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

“We had bikini-clad spectators on the beach and visitors from around the world dressed in barefoot elegance in our VIP Marquee enjoying the polo action against the backdrop of the stunning Kimberley coast.  All those elements of this unique event, Australia’s only beach polo tournament, were shared through social media and we’ve already had several expressions of interest from international polo clubs wanting to join us, so I am delighted to announce that Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2014 will be held in Broome on the weekend of May 24-25 next year, pending Shire approval.”

The return of Pinctada Cable Beach Polo to Broome on May 24-25 2014 was also welcomed by Broome Shire President Graeme Campbell.

“This event has kicked off Broome’s high tourism season in an exciting and positive way and it will no doubt only get bigger and better with players and tourists coming from around the world to experience it,” Cr Campbell said.

Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013 also featured 43 of Australia’s finest equine athletes from the stable of the Swan Valley Polo Club, the strongest polo club in Western Australia.  The horses arrived in Broome last Tuesday night after a 2-day road trip from Perth.  They ‘stretched their legs’ with a beach walk on Wednesday morning and adjusted to the sand surface with two training sessions in the days leading up to the weekend tournament.

Another highlight of Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013 was the inaugural Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge, which saw four young Indigenous stockmen come to the sea to compete in Australia’s only beach polo tournament. The Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge, has been developed to introduce the sport of polo to young riders in the Kimberley and Matt Welsh, Captain of the Swan Valley Polo Club, oversaw the training of the young stockmen in the skills of the game during the weeks leading up to the tournament, with Major Vishal Chauhan helping out in the final days. The stockmen were also vying for the inaugural Swan Valley Polo Club Scholarship, which was awarded to Jimmy Long who now has an opportunity to further hone his newly acquired polo skills as the scholarship will see him working, training and playing alongside members of the Swan Valley Polo Club during the 2014 polo season.

The ‘between chukka’ action featured fashion themed spectator events on each day of the tournament – Sand Chic on Saturday and Style on the Sand on Sunday.  On each day the female winner received Paspaley jewellery while the male winners of Sand Chic and Style on the Sand received a limited edition 6-litre bottle of Bunnamagoo 1827 Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from the vines of historic Bunnamagoo Estate, one of the Paspaley family's vineyards in central NSW.

The weekend tournament was the cornerstone of the Pinctada Cable Beach Polo Festival which included a range of events and celebrations including cocktail parties, art gallery showings and Dinner Under The Stars on Cable Beach.

Each match played during the weekend was a four chukka contest with three players per side – this is one of the key differences between beach polo and traditional field polo, which has four players per side.  Beach polo is also played with a larger sized coloured ball.

TEAM PROFILES - PASPALEY INTERNATIONAL BEACH POLO CUP

Pinctada Cable Beach Australian Team:

o   Matt Welsh is a +4 goal player and captain of the Swan Valley Polo Club, the strongest polo club in Western Australia.  An outstanding horseman, Matt is not only regarded as one of Australia’s leading polo players, but has also built an international reputation as a leading trainer of polo ponies.  Matt has played polo in major tournaments throughout the world, most recently joining fellow Swan Valley Polo Club members Nick Bowen, Greg Johnson and Glindon Webster to represent Western Australia in the Ozfest Polo Cup, played at the Rajasthan Polo Ground in Jaipur, India.

o  Luke Reid, 21, is a +2 goal player and the son of former Australian field polo captain Derek Reid, whose handicap was +6.  Like Gaurav Sahgal, the Indian player he marked in the Paspaley International Beach Polo Match on Sunday May 19, Luke is widely regarded as Australia’s up and coming player of the future.  Polo has already taken Luke around the world, playing in England, Ireland, China, Argentina and New Zealand.  Luke, who is renowned for his exceptional stick skills and coolness under pressure, represented Australia in the under-21 colts match against New Zealand in 2010 and was integral to the Australians victory in the trans-Tasman clash.

o  Warwick Prendiville, 22, is another young player who represents the future of Australian polo. Warwick, the son of Swan Valley Polo Club patron Peter Prendiville, consistently plays above his +1 handicap and has competed in polo tournaments in Argentina, England, America and New Zealand.

Hutchinson Real Estate India:

Aged 32, he is a mercurial forward, who can turn a match.

o  Angad Singh, currently a +1 handicapped player, is descended from Indian – and polo – royalty. In the early 1900's one of his ancestors was a +8 goal player and patron of the 'Patiala Tigers', a 36 goal team consisting of the only two Indian 10 goalers to date. – his mother is a member of Punjab’s royal family and he is the grandson of the Maharaja of Patiala. Angad, 25, took up polo in 2005 after competing in other equestrian sports throughout India for a decade.  In 2008 he was voted emerging player of the year by the Indian Polo Association. He will be playing polo for the University of Cambridge in England for a year starting this September and, as well as competing in major Indian tournaments, he has also played in Dubai and England. He is also a member of the Sherdils team, which plays in an annual fixture against the British Army to raise money for charity.  Angad is passionate about attracting more spectators and players to polo and has been promoting the sport in India by mobilizing sponsorship and managing polo teams for the last three years.  Along with his father, he owns and manages a successful thoroughbred the stud farm.  Angad has been working in the sugar industry in India and is currently leading the diversification of Simbhaoli Sugars into various adjacent segments both within India and overseas.

o  Gaurav Sahgal, 22, is handicapped at +3 goals and described by Major Vishal Chauhan as “the best young up and coming player in India". Based in Delhi, Gaurav has been playing polo since he was 12 and represented India at the last World Cup at  Argentina. He has played internationally in countries including Argentina, England, New Zealand, Italy, Barbados – and, now, Australia. Polo is in Gaurav’s blood and horses are his passion. His father, who has played polo for more than 35 years, is a racehorse owner and breeder as well as being a Steward of the Indian Polo Association and a steward, committee member and Honorary Secretary of the Delhi Race Club.

YOUNG INDIGENOUS STOCKMEN THRILL CROWD AT AUSTRALIA’S ONLY BEACH POLO TOURNAMENT

Four young Indigenous stockmen came to the sea today to compete in Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013, Australia’s only beach polo tournament, which is being played on iconic Cable Beach in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia this weekend (May 18-19).

In the lead-up to the tournament stockmen Marcus Laurie, Harley Howard and brothers Ian and Jimmy Long have been learning the skills of polo on their stock horses.

They played their first practice chukka on the sand – and, on polo ponies - on Thursday and today they lined up on the Cable Beach sand to play their first polo match before a crowd of spectators clad in bikinis and board shorts as well as those enjoying the action from the barefoot elegance of the VIP marquee.

The stockmen competed in the inaugural Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge, which has been developed to introduce the sport of polo to young riders in the Kimberley.
Matt Welsh, Captain of the Swan Valley Polo Club, has been overseeing the training of the young stockmen in the skills of the game during the lead up to Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013.

Matt Welsh, a 4-goal player, teamed up with Harley Howard, 18, and Jimmy Long, 17, in the Saltbush Musterers team this morning while Ian Long, 19, and Marcus Laurie, 18, teamed up with visiting 3-goaler Major Vishal Chauhan in the Roebuck Bay Ringers team.

The clash embraced the excitement of beach polo and the rich rural history of Australia’s unique Kimberley landscape. The outstanding horsemanship of the young stockmen was evident from the start and Jimmy Long opened the scoring with his first polo goal.

“It’s just a fantastic feeling to score my first polo goal in my first polo match here on Cable Beach,” Jimmy said. “The past few weeks have been a great opportunity to learn some new skills and meet some new people and, if I can learn polo anyone can! It’s a great sport and I can’t wait to take it back to all my friends and work mates on the stations.”

Jimmy’s brother Ian went on to score the remaining three goals in the game to clinch a 3-1 win for the Roebuck Bay Ringers.

“it felt great,”  Ian said. “I didn’t think I’d score one goal so to get three goals and win the game with my team mates was good, especially with my Dad and my family here watching.”

“It’s a great opportunity and I’m honoured to win the Swan Valley Polo Club Scholarship,” Jimmy said after the awards presentation.

Marilynne Paspaley AM, Pinctada Cable Beach Polo Director, said the inaugural Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge also showcases the spirit, history and culture of the Kimberley.

“The Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge celebrates this unique region by bringing the stockmen to the sea to compete in an event that is also unique – Australia’s only beach polo tournament,” she says.  “The four young stockmen playing here today have taken on this challenge with an enthusiasm and a commitment that has inspired us all.  While there can only be one winner of the inaugural Swan Valley Polo Scholarship, each of these young stockmen has a winning attitude and it has been an absolute delight to host them at Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013.”

The Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge was a four-chukka game with each team comprising a professional polo player and two Indigenous stockmen – the three-a-side format is one of the key differences between beach polo and traditional polo, which features four players in each team.

“Personally I love the flair Indigenous athletes display in a range of sports, but I’d never seen an Indigenous polo player until the past few weeks,” Matt says.  “My challenge was to not only train the stockmen in the skills of polo but also to give them the confidence to display their horsemanship on the beach polo arena. This event is a first and Ian, Jimmy, Marcus and Harley turned on a great spectacle – they’re terrific horsemen and play with great flair.”

Matt Welsh’s polo career has taken him around the world and he is thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce young people to his sport.

“Our ultimate goal is to make the sport of polo available to everyone and I think the Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge is a terrific initiative,” Matt says.  “Our focus this year is on young Indigenous stockmen, but in time we see the event developing to include all young people who grow up or work on the Kimberley stations.  Most professional polo players come from a farming background and we want all young Kimberley horsemen and women to experience the thrill and the fun of our sport.  The idea this year is to introduce some of the young Indigenous stockmen to polo and hopefully they’ll take it back to the remote Kimberley stations and start playing the game again.  Polo was a popular pastime on the stations a century ago, but to the best of my knowledge it is rarely played now.”

A story about a polo match between two Kimberley stations in the late 1800s inspired the Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge.

“I came across a great story about a polo match played between two stations on Christmas Day back in the 1890s,” Matt explains.  “It prompted me to start thinking about ways we could help to reintroduce this polo tradition to the remote stations.  I sent the story to Marilynne Paspaley who saw an opportunity to embrace the tradition in the Pinctada Cable Beach Polo event and so, the Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge was conceived.”

Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013 is free to watch picnic-style from the beach or tickets can be purchased to the VIP beach marquee.

PINCTADA CABLE BEACH POLO ‘SHAPING UP AS WORLD CLASS EVENT’
The ‘sexiest sport on earth’ is coming to one of the world’s most stunning beaches ...

Australia’s only beach polo tournament is a family affair when it comes to sponsorship, with pearling’s Paspaley family and brewing’s Cooper family taking prime position on the sand when Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013 is played next month.

Marilynne Paspaley AM, Director of the Pinctada Cable Beach Polo Festival, today confirmed sponsorship of key elements of the tournament, which will be played on the weekend of May 18-19 on Broome’s Cable Beach in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia.

Stephanie Buckland, CEO of Tourism WA, believes the sponsorship announcements add to the excitement that is building for the event.

“The 2013 Pinctada Cable Beach Polo Festival is shaping up as a world class event and I encourage the people of Broome, the Kimberley region and Western Australia as a whole to get behind it,” Ms Buckland says.  “This unique event and its many elements are a perfect fit for Broome’s internationally famous Cable Beach.”

The Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge, which will see young Indigenous stockmen team up with leading polo players, is the showcase match on Saturday May 18 when Coopers, the official beer sponsor for the tournament, will transform the ticketed VIP marquee into the Coopers 1862 Kimberley Lounge.

Paspaley pearls is Match Title Sponsor of one of the key elements of the event, the Paspaley International Beach Polo Cup, which will see a team of leading Indian players take on the home side on Sunday May 19.

Coopers Chairman Glenn Cooper sees Pinctada Cable Beach Polo as an ideal fit for the ales that five generations of his family have been brewing in South Australia since 1862.

“The Kimberley coast, one of Australia’s natural wonders, is an ideal backdrop to showcase our beers which are truly Australian and all natural with no preservatives or additives,” Glenn says.  “We are now the nation’s only Australian-owned major brewery so it’s also a good fit to hook up with Australia’s only beach polo tournament.”

Tickets are available at cablebeachpolo.com.au to join players in the Coopers 1862 Kimberley Lounge which will also feature Kronenbourg 1664, a French premium lager that Coopers has been distributing in Australia since July last year.

“Kronenbourg 1664 is popular in international polo circles but still relatively undiscovered in Australia,” Glenn says. “The Kimberley is a world famous destination for adventure and discovery and we also see it as a perfect opportunity for people to explore the finest beer France has to offer in Kronenbourg 1664.”

Marilynne Paspaley’s Pinctada Hotels & Resorts, a venture that is independent of her family’s pearling interests, is the event title sponsor and underwriter while its flagship property, Pinctada Cable Beach, is the tournament’s official hotel.

“Pinctada Cable Beach Polo is an inclusive event and the beach polo action is free to watch picnic-style from the sand or spectators also have the option to purchase tickets to the VIP Marquees,” Marilynne says.  “Each day of the tournament has a different theme – Saturday is the more casual ‘Australian beach day’ and this theme will be embraced when the marquee is transformed to the Coopers 1862 Kimberley Lounge.  To reflect the glamour and excitement of the international clash on the Sunday, the marquee will be more akin to Melbourne’s Spring racing carnival Birdcage with a ‘barefoot elegance’ dress code.”

Tickets to the Coopers 1862 Kimberley Lounge on Saturday 18 May include sumptuous cuisine by Broome restaurant, The Aarlie, a fine selection of beers by Coopers as well as Kronenbourg 1664, and a selection of Bunnamagoo wines and Belvedere cocktails.  Tickets to the Pinctada Cable Beach Polo VIP Marquee on Sunday May 19 include catering by Pinctada Cable Beach’s award-winning Selene Brasserie and a fine selection of beverages, including Veuve Clicquot champagne, Coopers beers and Belvedere cocktails, which will be served throughout the afternoon. A Weekend Marquee Ticket is also available.

In addition to the Coopers 1862 Kimberley Lounge on Saturday May 18, an alcohol-free family marquee, sponsored by the Shinju Motor Group, has been created in support of the Isolated Children's Parents Association.

“This is a terrific opportunity for families from remote regions in the Kimberley, as well as Broome local families, to experience the beach polo and cheer on the young Indigenous stockmen who will be teaming up with the captains of the Australian and Indian teams in the Commonwealth Bank Kimberley Challenge,” Marilynne says. “We want to ensure Kimberley families have the opportunity to enjoy the comfort of the marquee at a family price.”

Other sponsors for Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013 include Commonwealth Bank, Broome International Airport, West Australian Regional Newspapers, Hutchinson Real Estate, H&M Tracey Construction, Boulevard Shopping Centre, Catalina Adventures and GPG Group. Veuve Clicquot is the event’s champagne partner and Bunnamagoo is the exclusive wine sponsor.  Bali Hai, Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa and Seashells Broome are supporting accommodation partners while Shinju Motor Group is the official Vehicle Provider.

“I am truly delighted with the sponsorship mix for Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013,” Marilynne says. “The global brands reflect the international flavour of the event, the national brands embrace the innovation of Australia’s only beach polo tournament and the local sponsors reflect the strong support of the Broome and wider Kimberley community for the event.  All our sponsors see the opportunity for Pinctada Cable Beach Polo to grow and become a hallmark event on the Australian tourism calendar and I thank each of them for their support.”

Ms Paspaley also acknowledged Tourism WA and Australia’s Northwest Tourism for their significant support of the event.

“Tourism WA is pleased to be able to help market and promote the festival,” Stephanie Buckland says.  “Congratulations to Marilynne and her team, and we wish the competitors, sponsors and spectators a successful, safe and enjoyable event.”
