TEAMS ANNOUNCED: CORONATION CUP, 24 JULY 2005

19 Jul 2005

This will be the first time an all Australian team has played for the Coronation Cup at Cartier International Day on Sunday 24th July 2005 at the Guards Club, Windsor in England.

Two members of this team have already experienced International Day success as Australia’s captain, Glen Gilmore and team-mate Jack “Ruki” Baillieu, Australia’s highest handicapped player, were members of the victorious Rest of the World team on Cartier International Day 2002.

Gilmore and Baillieu will be strongly supported by two six-goalers, Damien Johnston, who has flown in specifically for this game, and Mike Todd, who has been in devastating form this season, most recently winning the Phoenican Cup at Guards Polo Club on 10 July with Belmont.

Henry Brett will again lead England onto The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. He will be joined by brothers Luke and Mark Tomlinson and Malcolm Borwick, who is making his debut for the England team in this match. Borwick is following in his family’s footsteps though as his great-grandfather Cecil Nickalls and his great-great uncle, Pat Nickalls were members of the England team that played in the Westchester Cup – the trophy which replaces the Coronation Cup when England play North America – from 1904-1908.

The Coronation Cup match starts at 3.15pm, but the polo action is not confined to the afternoon. Early visitors to Smith’s Lawn, the home of Guards Polo Club for the past 50 years, will have the opportunity to watch several other leading players in the Golden Jubilee Cup. This match, which starts at 11am, traditionally features a Hurlingham team – named after the sport’s governing body and the organiser of this polo day– in action against a Prince of Wales squad. Prince Harry will again don a shirt bearing the Prince of Wales’s feathers in this competition. He is joined by Andrew Hine, a former captain of the England team, James Harper and Nacho Gonzales. The light blue shirts of Hurlingham, again supported by Buchanan Harvey, will be worn by Satnam Dhillon, Roddy Williams, John Martin and James Beim. Beim may have to miss out on the morning game as he is also reserve for the England team. If that is the case his place will be taken by Chris Hyde, while Jamie Le Hardy is reserve for the Rolls Royce-sponsored Prince of Wales’s team.

England: Henry Brett (capt, 7); Mark Tomlinson (6); Malcolm Borwick (6); Luke Tomlinson (7). Reserve: James Beim (6).
Australia: Damien Johnston (6); Ruki Baillieu (8); Glen Gilmore (capt, 6); Mike Todd (6). Reserve: Rob Archibald (5)

The Prince of Wales’ Team : Harry Wales (1); James Harper (6); Nacho Gonzalez (6); Andrew Hine (capt, 6). Reserve: Jamie Le Hardy (6).
Hurlingham: Satnam Dhillon (6); Roddy Williams (6); James Beim (capt, 6); John Martin (1). Reserve: Chris Hyde (6).
